Lip tattooing is the latest beauty trend to subtly enhance your lip shape and colour without the use of injectable fillers. The skin on your lips is delicate so it’s important to research this treatment prior to getting a lip tattoo to protect your pout against unwanted side affects.

Lip tattooing has been re-imagined to fit the modern day desires of women wanting to subtly enhance the natural colour of their lips. Lip Blushing is a technique designed to create a soft, kissable wash of colour that restores fullness and shape to the lips. This treatment when performed by an experienced technician is very gentle and has minimal downtime of around 3-5 days.

There are a few “need to know” tips to prepare your lips for this treatment that will ensure beautiful results.

Dry/chapped lips, a no-no!

It’s not possible to perform a lip tattooing treatment on dry/chapped or sun burnt lips. The skin on our lips is already a sensitive area and if they aren’t in good condition prior to your appointment we cannot proceed with the treatment. Ensure your lips are smooth and hydrated before your appointment by gently exfoliating any dead skin build up a few days prior to your appointment (a sugar scrub or gentle rub with a face cloth is great for this) and use a nourishing lip balm with SPF regularly.

Do you suffer from cold sores?

Clients that carry the cold sore virus (even if you haven’t had a breakout for years) need to take preventative measures to ensure they don’t experience a cold sore outbreak following a lip tattoo. Lip tattooing is extremely stimulating to the lip area and will almost certainly cause a cold sore flare up without anti-viral treatment.

Fear not, you are still eligible to have this treatment and there are very convenient ways to minimise the chances of a cold sore occurring from a lip tattoo. It is always advised that you discuss these options in detail with a pharmacist or GP a week or 2 prior to your appointment. We suggest asking about an over the counter medication “Famvir”. You don’t need a prescription for this and it can be very effective if taken at least 2 days prior to your lip tattoo treatment. We have listed the facts sheet for this medicine below however always follow the advice of a pharmacist or GP before commencing any medication.

Famvir (cold sore) facts sheet

For smokers…

Smoking in the initial days of healing, directly following a lip tattoo will cause unwanted discolouration and may also increase your chances of infection. It’s important to commit to temporarily quit cigarettes for at least 3 days following a lip tattoo treatment to assist the healing process and ensure desired results. Nicotine replacement patches may help you through but if you can’t see yourself holding out for this amount of time you may not be a suitable candidate for a lip tattoo.

Lip tattooing can look amazing and help to restore fullness, symmetry, and flattering colour to thin, uneven or ageing lips. To achieve the best results consider the tips above and your lip tattoo will be well worth the investment.

Cosmetic tattooing is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure. It involves tattooing specialised pigment into the upper layers of the skin. This procedure can be used to enhance the eyebrows, lips, eyes, scalp and more.

What is Eyebrow Tattooing?

Eyebrow tattooing has several methods such as microblading, hair stroke or “feather touch” all which use a small blade or fine needle to create a “hair-like” look. Ombré or powdered eyebrows are created with a tattoo machine and have a darker finish to look like brow makeup. We also offer a combination of both styles called 3D or Combo brows. Eyebrow tattooing last between 1-2 years, which allows for adjustment to shape, thickness and placement as our face changes with age. Want to know more – read our in-depth article “Our Signature Eyebrow Service”

What is Eyeliner Tattooing?

Eyeliner Tattooing is used to enhance the lash line and provide a waterproof option to replace regular eye makeup. A  semi-permanent pigment is used for this treatment so that adjustments can be made as our eyes change over time. These pigments are also specially designed and are safe for use on delicate/sensitive skin. Eyeliner tattoos may last for a few years before needing maintenance treatments. For more information on our treatment – read “Our Signature Eyeliner Service”

What is Lip Tattooing?

Lip tattoo treatments can range from a lipstick shade to a soft rosy hue that restores natural fullness and shape to the lip line. It can be used to create a very subtle enhancement if the appropriate colour is selected.  This is a popular lip tattooing method usually called a full lip stain or lip blush tattoo. It may also last several years before needing maintenance treatments.

  • It can remedy sparse or uneven eyebrows, the struggle of uneven eyeliner and uneven lip lines.

With the right care, eyebrow tattooing is a worthwhile investment. They will save you the frustration of powdering/pencilling in your brows every morning and are swim, sweat and smudge-proof.  Eyebrow tattooing is the perfect waterproof solution for workouts or days at the beach. With that said, it’s important to be aware that eyebrow tattooing and other cosmetic tattoos are semi-permanent. This means they fade over time, unlike regular body tattoos.

Why are cosmetic tattoos semi-permanent?

Cosmetic tattooing pigments are designed to be semi-permanent for a couple of reasons. The short lifespan of cosmetic tattoos means that as our face ages, it is possible to recreate a more lifted and youthful appearance. Another benefit is whether there is a change in trend, your hair colour, or your taste – using pigments that fade between 6-18 months allows the shape/colour to be adjusted regularly to suit.

Bottom: Eyebrow tattoo after 18 months. Colour has faded to a reddish-brown tone. Top: Eyebrow tattoo after Refresh Appointment.
Bottom: Eyebrow tattoo after 18 months. Colour has faded to a reddish-brown tone. Top: Eyebrow tattoo after Refresh Appointment.

Modern semi-permanent pigments eventually fade to a very light reddish-brown tone. These pigments are easily refreshed at future maintenance appointments. Permanent inks are not designed specifically for cosmetic tattooing and will age to a dark blue, green or grey colour. These types of eyebrow tattoos usually require laser removal before modern pigments can be used over the top.

How can I maintain my eyebrow tattoo?

There are just a few lifestyle tips that will keep your eyebrow tattoo looking fresh and ensure lasting results.

Avoid the sun!

I don’t mean lock yourself away in a dungeon…but spending extended amounts of time in direct sun is a no. If you’re going on a holiday and are out in the rays a lot, you must be smart about it. That means good SPF, a hat and even oversized sunnies, if possible.  For daily incidental sun exposure, just make sure your moisturiser has an SPF, apply over your face and brows and you’re good to go. This tip goes for maintaining youthful skin too! The sun is the biggest contributor to premature fading of cosmetic tattoos. Protect your investment and the health of your skin by always wearing SPF.

Young women having fun by the pool at hot summer day

Don’t use active skincare ingredients over your brow area.

That BHA scrub that was recommended by your skin therapist, is great for keeping your skin glowing. But its exfoliating properties are no good for your eyebrow tattoo. Don’t freak out…you can still use your amazing skincare but just don’t apply it directly over your brows. This goes for any products with Retinol, AHA/BHAs or exfoliation products in general. If your cleanser contains acids it could be prematurely fading your eyebrow tattoo so best to cleanse around them. Avoid everything besides SPF and makeup directly over your brows.

Image of woman applying skin care

You still need to wax and potentially tint.

Eyebrow tattooing is magical, but unfortunately, it doesn’t stop unwanted hair growth. You will still need to visit your beautician for regular waxing to keep your brows looking their best. If you have very blonde or grey brow hairs these can be more noticeable with an eyebrow tattoo. Having eyebrow tints when required will help to blend your hair with the tattoo and create a more natural look.

eyebrow waxing

Suitability for cosmetic tattooing.

If you look after your eyebrow tattoo you will enjoy perfectly on point brows for up to 18 months. As with any cosmetic procedure, individual results do vary and are also dependent on skin types/medications and other factors. Clients with oily skin types or that take thyroxine/antidepressants/medications may need more regular maintenance appointments (usually between 6-12 months) as these factors, unfortunately, contribute to faster fading.
To determine how suitable Eyebrow tattooing will be for you it is best to speak with a professional.

Your new brows will look amazing on the day of the procedure. Here is how to best prepare for what the healing process will bring in the 4 weeks that follow to avoid unnecessary stress/disappointment. We’ve compiled a day by day timeline following a cosmetic brow tattoo procedure and why you need to follow your aftercare advice correctly. Repeat after me – my brows are going to look amazing, all good things take time.

DAY 1  Your cosmetic tattooist has completed your treatment

Within a few hours, the tattooed area will feel a little tender and you may experience some minor swelling/redness for the first 24 hrs. The pigment colour will look very dark for the next 2-3 days and the shape of your brows may appear thicker than desired due to swelling. As the healing process has begun the tattooed area will begin to weep with lymph (a normal wound healing response). It is best to keep the area from forming a scab at this stage, so we suggest patting dry with a clean tissue until the lymph subsides.

You will also be provided with a special aftercare cream to apply twice daily. Clean the area first with dampened cotton and gently pat dry, you do not want to be firm or rub the area as the pigment is delicate and has not settled into the skin yet. Apply a small amount of the cream with a cotton tip (it should look like a very light sheen on the skin). If too much is applied it will look greasy like Vaseline and the excess should be removed with a dry tissue or cotton round. Using a minimal amount of aftercare cream allows airflow to support quicker healing whilst still protecting the area from infection.  This twice-daily routine should be followed for at least 7-10 days or until the flaking/shedding process is complete.

Before and directly after treatment – Combo brows

DAY 2  Your brow tattoo will still look ridiculously dark! Fear not – this will not be the final colour.

The redness and swelling should have subsided.  The tattoo pigment once settled into the skin goes through a few stages of colour variation before the healed results in 4 weeks.  Rest assured this dark pigment will settle after a few days and the healed outcome is up to 60% lighter than how your brows look today. PHEW!

DAY 3-5  Your brows may be beginning to flake/shed and itch!

These are all expected signs of healing. Do not pick or peel minor scabs prematurely, instead allow them to come away naturally. You may notice some colour on the cotton round when you clean your brows, this is also normal. As the skin heals, the excess pigment is pushed out as it naturally exfoliates itself. You will also experience some itchiness during this time. As much as the urge to scratch calls to you, refrain from scratching as this can lead to infection and a patchy healed result. Some tips to help soothe the itch – use a clean tissue and press carefully but firmly on the area or use a cotton tip to lightly massage away the itch.

Some peeling may occur and your brows may look patchy at this stage.

DAY 6-10  Your brow tattoo is coming to the end of the healing process.

Most of the flaking/shedding should be complete and the pigment colour will look a lot lighter. You may also notice some inconsistency in the colour and a white veil appearance over the area. This is the skins natural response to form a build-up of skin cells over the brow tattoo. This will gently exfoliate away in another week or so revealing the true healed colour of your eyebrow tattoo.

It is expected after the first session that not all pigment is retained. Some minor adjustments to shape, colour, or consistency will need to be addressed at the touch-up appointment. Don’t fret if your tattoo looks as though it has partially disappeared. Your brow tattooist will correct this at your touch-up appointment which should always be scheduled 4-6 weeks from the initial procedure.

Healed results before touch up.

4-6 Week Touch up Appointment

The touch-up appointment is a repeat of the first procedure. You must follow the same aftercare to ensure best pigment retention and results. Having a second application allows the pigment to bond to the skin and provides a consistent appearance and longevity of the eyebrow tattoo. Be sure to discuss with your cosmetic tattooist any areas you would like to alter at this appointment. It is your opportunity to tweak shape, colour or any gaps you have noted over the past 4 weeks.

Sometimes, depending on how minimal the touch-up work was, the healing process of this procedure may be reduced. However, it is crucial to follow the same aftercare requirements as advised at your first eyebrow tattoo procedure.

Very rarely some factors such as skin type, particularly oily skin, or clients taking medications can have issues retaining pigment. In these cases, more than one touch up appointment may be necessary.  These clients may also need to have maintenance appointments sooner than the recommended 12 months. Your brow tattooist should advise you of these obstacles in your initial consultation.

Healed Results

You should expect within 4 weeks of the touch up for your brows to be completely healed. You can now flaunt your fabulous brows with little maintenance for the next 12-18months. I say little maintenance for the following reasons: tattooing your brows does not stop unwanted hair growth – you will still need to keep up your usual waxing/threading or tweezing regime when required. If you normally have your brows tinted, you may decide the colour of the tattoo is suitable enough to give tinting a miss. If you have blonde or grey brow hairs however, you can still have tinting treatments without affecting your eyebrow tattoo.

If you have chosen Feather touch / Microblading for your brow tattoo style it is designed to mimic natural hairs, not fully powdered brows. You can still pencil or powder your eyebrows to compliment your more glamorous makeup looks. If you want your brows to look like makeup 24/7 then we suggest Ombre or Combination eyebrow tattooing to be a more suitable choice. If you are still unsure which style is right for you, please read our article here – Which brow tattoo style is right for you?

Now that you know exactly what to expect following an eyebrow tattooing procedure you can save yourself any stress those first few days when your brows are looking bolder than desired! Follow the aftercare provided and you can patiently and confidently await your perfect arches to be magically revealed!

Who knew there were options?

Clients often have some idea of what they would like their brows to look like. After all, who knows your morning brow routine, lifestyle and signature look better than yourself? To help determine which eyebrow tattoo technique will be best suited to each client, I always start with a few key questions to get to know you and your brow goals.

Do you wear makeup regularly?

You may prefer our Ombré/Combination styles.

Do you spend much time outdoors?

Sun exposure does prematurely fade cosmetic tattoos, particularly Feather Touch styles.

Describe your skins oil flow?

Oily skin types do not retain pigment as well as dry skin types. We may need to select darker colours. Oily skin types are not suitable candidates for Microblading but we can still achieve a Feather Touch style using a tattoo machine method.

Have you previously had cosmetic tattooing?

Cover-ups of older eyebrow tattoos may require removal treatments or a powder style technique to completely cover the old pigment.

More on the styles available…

Here’s a breakdown, the pros, the cons, the features and benefits of the most up to date brow tattooing techniques available and how we guide you in the direction of your dream brows.

The most effective tattooing techniques and the 3 styles created here at Feather and Lace Cosmetic Tattoo are Machine-stroke or Microblading (also known as Feather touch, Hair stroke), Ombré (a soft but full powdered look) or a combination of the 2 (also known as 3D brows).

Machine-stroke or Microblading:

Microblading has steadily grown in popularity over the last 5 years and is the most natural of all the styles. A manual tool is used to create very fine hair stroke designs that match in harmoniously with existing brow hairs. If you have sparse growth or no hair at all, this style can create the illusion of fluffy, feathery and symmetrical brows.

This style is perfect for women who don’t wear a lot of makeup or none at all. Clients with oily skin types or sun-damaged skin are not suitable candidates for microblading. We can, however, create the same hair stroke effect using a tattoo machine method. We prefer to create our Feather Touch brows using this machine method at Feather and Lace Cosmetic Tattoo, as it is gentler on the skin and has better colour retention.

Because this technique is the lightest option of the three, it can fade prematurely when faced with challenges such as oily skin, sun exposure or clients who regularly use active skin care ingredients (i.e AHA’s, retinol etc.) Without these factors Machine stroke/Microbladed eyebrow tattooing generally lasts 12 months. We recommend a colour Refresh Appointment annually to keep your feathery arches looking their best.

Ombré:

Ombré brows are a modern take on old fashioned shaded brows. The final result is a soft powdery finish with all the definition you’d normally create with brow makeup. Simplify your makeup routine and wake up with flawless brows everyday – perfect for enhancing already full brows or for lovers of makeup and all things glam. These babies are suitable for all skin types and last longer before requiring a Refresh Appointment, around 1-2 years (depending on some lifestyle factors).

Combination:

Last but certainly not least and my personal favourite, combining Machine stroke or Microblading hair strokes with Ombré powder. This technique creates a more 3D effect (hence the nickname, 3D Brows), so it looks like you have amazing feathery brows with the added definition of glamorous powder. Have the best of both styles and your very own show stopping brows! This style generally lasts 1-2 years when cared for correctly. See our article here for information on eyebrow tattoo longevity.

Regardless of the style you choose, Feather and Lace Cosmetic Tattoo are here to provide personalised service, trustworthy advice and to create beautiful brows that inspire confidence.  I love getting to know my clients and exceeding their expectations of what we can achieve with cosmetic eyebrow tattooing.
